This composition is the companion track to an avant-garde film I made of the same name during my time at MassArt. It was recorded over my Thanksgiving break (11.21.2012) during a trip home. The piece itself utilizes many layers of 3 instruments: vocals (slightly), cello, and most prominent, the Prepared Piano. For non-music nerds, a prepared piano is when you open that baby up and mess with it! By placing items on the strings (like paper, keys, or anything not too heavy) you create a percussive vibration when you play the affected keys. I’ve always loved how it evokes imagery of a broken instrument. I feel like it’s an aural approximation of pictures of nature reclaiming buildings, which is such a cool aesthetic.
